To Know, Worship and Love - Illustration based layouts

Digital Designer - 2022 - 2025

Project Involvement

Upon receiving a written chapter with its units, I created engaging, curriculum-aligned educational content for primary and secondary students, blending design, illustration, and front-end development to bring religious education to life in a digital format.

Each module was crafted with age-appropriate visuals and interactivity, guided by mood boards, storyboards, and audience research to ensure relevance and clarity across year levels. I illustrated and edited visual assets using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, applying strong foundations in colour theory, typography, and current design trends.

To enhance engagement, I produced custom animations in After Effects, exported as Lottie/Bodymovin JSON files for smooth and lightweight web integration. I then compiled the approved text, illustrations, and animations into interactive modules using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, ensuring responsive layouts and accessibility across platforms. Comprehensive testing was conducted on multiple devices, formats, and browsers to guarantee optimal performance, usability, and learner experience.

Apps and Skills:

Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects (with Overlord)), Lottie/Bodymovin, HTML, CSS, JavaScript (Sublime/ VS Code), Jira, Bitbucket, Slack, Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite, UI/UX, Storyboarding, Animation, Illustration, Educational Design.

Hardware:

Apple MacBook, iPad Pro with Pencil (Gen 1 and 2) for Illustrations using Sidecar app, XP-Pen drawing display tablet and stylus.

Below are a few of the chapters and units I created based on the written content provided.

Human Development

The comic-book style remains timeless and universally relatable across all age groups. I found this visual approach particularly effective for maintaining engagement and creating a sense of familiarity between the characters in the story and the audience’s favourite commercial superheroes or heroines.

I especially enjoyed the creative process behind illustrating this chapter, it marked the second comic-inspired chapter I developed at To Know, Worship, and Love (KWL), allowing me to further refine my storytelling through dynamic composition, expressive characters, and narrative-driven design.

Synoptic Gospels

The Synoptic Gospels formed part of a series of four interconnected “brother-sister” chapters, each requiring a unique illustrated title page designed to visually complement and connect the set.

For this project, I incorporated several Easter eggs within the illustrations and subtle visual details that reference key events from each of the Gospels. This approach transformed each title page into a standalone teaching piece, inviting students to explore and interpret the imagery as part of their learning experience.

Encountering Jesus

Encountering Jesus was the first comic-book style chapter I created at KWL. For this project, I took inspiration from Frank Miller’s Sin City, opting for a bold film noir aesthetic and a predominantly black-and-white palette with selective colour accents used for emphasis and emotional impact.

This art style demanded careful balance and precision, relying heavily on strong contrasts, controlled use of black, and detailed cross-hatching to define characters and maintain visual depth. It was a challenging yet rewarding process that strengthened my understanding of tone, composition, and visual storytelling.

Caring for Creation

This chapter draws inspiration from Pope Francis’s Laudato si’, a call for us to care more thoughtfully for our planet and all living beings. Early in the design process, I ran into a challenge: the planets in the backgrounds were too detailed, which ended up competing with the foreground illustrations.

By simplifying the planetary details, I was able to let the main elements shine, creating a composition that is both visually striking and thematically aligned with the message of stewardship and care.

Belonging

For this chapter, I chose to experiment with Doodle-style illustrations to visually interpret the narrative. This approach provided an enjoyable and exploratory shift from my usual illustrative style, allowing me to engage with the subject matter in a more spontaneous and expressive way.

Furthermore, the application of gradient colours introduced a subtle, watercolour-like texture that enhanced the overall composition. This technique complemented the simplicity of the Doodle aesthetic while adding depth and visual interest to the illustration.

Salvation History

In this chapter, I discovered that adopting a more playful illustration style can effectively support the communication of significant narratives, making the content accessible and engaging for both faith-based and non-faith-based audiences.

I particularly enjoyed working with the yellow background, as it elevated the prominence of the central illustrations while providing a strong visual contrast with the heading and subheading typography. This combination contributed to a cohesive and visually dynamic composition.

Parables

Parables was the first chapter at KWL for which I was granted complete creative freedom over the illustration style. For this project, I developed a digital watercolour-inspired approach that shaped the visual identity of the entire chapter.

The process was highly enjoyable and provided an opportunity to experiment with a range of digital brushes and techniques, fostering both creative exploration and technical growth in my illustration practice.
